Case 2: Quality of Life Web Survey
Web Survey versus EDC
For some type of Clinical Trials, using an Electronic Data Capture (EDC) system might be a bit overkill. Or sometimes the cost of using an EDC system exceeds the available Study budget. In other cases, a Bio-Pharmaceutical company might want to use a system which does not require any additional Site training.
And in other cases, there is a ‘mixed’ reason for setting up a study, partly Clinical and partly Marketing.

Using the Portal for a Web Survey
Due to it’s secure environment, the Clinical Investigator Portal proved to be an ideal platform to extend its use into collecting data directly from Cliinical Investigators (Sites) and Trial Patients. Together with our co-design partner Factory, a CRO specialized in Medical Device studies, we have been working on extending the Study-Portal with a Survey module.
The Survey can be used by Clinical Investigators and Patients alike. As each user always has to login to the Portal, the Portal knows the ‘role’ of the user (each user is automatically assigned a role upon login), and so an Investigator has access to different information, compared to a Patient. In this case, the Portal was used to collect weekly Quality of Life data from patients.
Patients are directed to the proper Survey page and can directly start entering data. They have (view) access to existing data, but cannot change existing data. In addition, they can access a graphical representation of their QoL score over time.
Sites have access to an Administration page were they can include patients, as well as access (view) the actual patient data. The patient data, off course is limited to their own subset of patients.
Enhanced communication
Profile information of Clinical Sites is used to enhance the communication between Site and Patients. As Patients were already ‘linked’ to Sites, Patients are automatically directed to the Investigator Profile of their ‘own’ Site.
About Factory
Factory-CRO is a full service European Contract Research Organization specialized in medical device trials for more than twenty years. Factory-CRO has experience in biological studies and device-drug combination. Factory-CRO is able to go into the field to provide in-person technical training for Investigators on the application of a medical device.
